Now that “Pack the Court” is on the other “Filibuster”
For the last four years, including during the campaigns, the Democrats have been screaming to pack the Supreme Court and to get rid of the Filibuster.
Ask them if they still feel the same way now that they have lost the Senate and the White House.
Imagine the reaction of a Republican Senator started making movements to end the Filibuster or if President Trump started discussing adding another two, four, or six Justices to the Supreme Court. There would be screaming and crying all over Washington DC, let alone places like California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Those states would end up being forced to GET IN LINE with the rest of the Republic.
Doesn’t sound like such a good idea now, does it?
Now that the Democrats have lost EVERYTHING, those checks and balances they wanted to remove to benefit themselves BEFORE the Republicans won EVERYTHING, seem like they should stay in place right? The idea of one party having a SCOTUS Majority of 8-3, 10-3, or 12-3 with massive longevity doesn’t sound right, does it?
Packing the court was a bad idea before and a bad idea now. You still had Democrat leaders (using that term loosely), who could not see beyond a Biden re-election or a Harris election. This is a different, but similar, Pandora’s Box as weaponizing the Department of Justice.
Do you know how scared people are of a Trump revenge tour? Do you realize how often people claimed President Trump was going to put them in jail without real cause….just like they tried to do to him for four years? This is exactly the same thing. They wanted President Biden to add Justices to SCOTUS to flip the party alignment. It was a power play to control the court. What if President Trump does it to ensure SCOTUS control? That’s still cool, right?
Of course it isn’t. Those dumbasses from the Democrat party couldn’t fathom it coming back to bite them in the ass, but here we are.
*** Side Note: There are people pushing Justice Sotomayor to step down before Biden leaves office to allow President Biden to Nominate VP Harris to replace Sotomayor. If you want to see Trump pack the court, do some stupid shit like that and see what happens. ***
Abolishing the Filibuster is equally as dumb. It was before. It is now.
The House of Representatives ditched the Filibuster a LONG time ago because as the number of Representatives grew, it outlived its usefulness. With the Senate sitting at a (mostly) fixed number, the Filibuster is still a useful tool in the “checks and balances” construct. Some actually refer to it as “the soul of the Senate”.
If you’re not familiar, and I am going to explain this in the simplest terms possible, getting rid of the Filibuster would turn pretty much every vote in the Senate to a simple majority vote. That means, once it passes the House (currently with a GOP majority) any and every vote would be able to pass the Senate with just a 50-50 vote and a tiebreaker from VP Vance OR if the Republican Senators just vote straight party loyalty, they don’t even need the tiebreaker.
*** Side Note: VP Harris said in a campaign speech that SHE would abolish the Filibuster through executive order if she became President. Yeah, she was that dumb. ***
So, if you get rid of the Filibuster and Pack the Courts, every single bill and law would go through the House (and pass) to the Senate (and pass) and then to the President to sign (which he would). Then if anyone wanted to appeal those decisions or newly passed laws through the courts, they would end up at a now heavily Republican (and Trump nominated) SCOTUS who would inevitably side with the President and the Republicans.
THIS is why we have checks and balances in place. THIS is why Packing the Court is a dumb idea. And THIS is why we leave the Filibuster in place.
So, remember this in the future when you hear people talking about these rash actions and removing some of the safety measures the founding fathers and the framers of the Constitution put in place. They are there for A REASON. They work. Don’t screw with them in some short-sighted effort to gain or maintain power.
*** Side Note: These are the same people that wanted to get rid of the Electoral College because they thought a Republican would NEVER win the popular vote again, because it hadn’t been done since 2004. Yeah, Trump won that, too. ANOTHER bad attempt to retain power that wouldn’t have worked. ***
I am sure the Democrats would agree leaving ALL the safeguards and ALL the checks and balances in place is a good idea Now that “Pack the Court” is on the other “Filibuster”.
